Turton Golf Club / Smoothes the way for Opening Day / Weds 20th February

After two winters of almost incessant rain, heavy snow & hard frosts, sections of the access road to Turton Golf Club (Wood End Lane) had fallen into a serious state of disrepair.

After seeking advice from Civil Engineers and Road Surfacing Contractors, local Bolton company H. Compsty & Son http://www.compsty.co.uk were engaged to carry out the resurfacing and repairs. The work comprised of the stripping and total resurfacing of approx 80 linear metres, cutting out and repair of a significant number of pot holes, making good two cattle grids and the addition of two new speed bumps to slow down vehicles as they join the residential area at the top of Hospital Road.

The work was professionally done and completed with the minimal amount of disruption and we are delighted with the results.

With Opening Day just 4 weeks away (Sat 23rd March) our members, visitors & guests can now enjoy a much smoother drive up to the course.

Turton Golf Club / Through to Rd 2 of the Mail on Sunday Golf Classic / Sun 10th February

Our quest for the Mail on Sunday Classic began on a ridiculously cold and snowy Sunday morning with the 5 brave soldiers from Turton putting on their waterproofs and pulling on their bob hats to face the might of Bolton Golf Club in the 1st round.

This is a National Knockout competition comprising of a team of 5 players with a maximum handicap allowance of 18. The individual matches are decided by handicap matchplay over 18 holes with full handicap difference being applied between the players.

It was easily the nastiest day on a golf course I’ve seen for a long time, but the boys came through with a fantastic 3 - 2 win. In the freezing conditions just holding on to the clubs was difficult and you knew that home advantage didn’t really count for much. I'd like to say to thank you to everyone who played and who came to watch.

The individual match results were as follows:-

Aaron Gandy Lost 4 & 2

Stephen Greenough Lost 3 & 2,

Shaun Bannister Won 2 & 1

Steve McDermott Won 4 & 2

Nigel Hallows Won 3 & 2.

Turton Golf Club now has an approved Nine-Hole course for Men / Tue 22nd Jan

It is clear that a significant number of our members, due to increasing demands in their working and family life, are unable to play 18 hole Qualifying Competitions frequently enough to establish and maintain a handicap representative of their potential ability.

With this in mind, we applied to England Golf for a measured Nine-Hole course for Men played over holes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14 & 15 and we are pleased to inform you that our application was approved today.

Here’s the Nine-Hole scorecard complete with stroke indexes. I’ve shown the actual hole alongside in brackets.

HOLE:     1 (1)    2 (2)    3 (3)    4 (7)    5 (8)    6 (12)    7 (13)    8 (14)    9 (15)   OUT

YARDS   297     173     487      281     408      405       363        519        191       3124

PAR          4          3          5          4          4           4           4              5            3           36

SI              6          9          3          8          2           4           7              1            5

This choice of holes makes for a very balanced card off the white tees with 2 x Par 5, 2 x Par 3 and 5 x Par 4 with a Par of 36.

It also makes for relatively easy walking by starting on the 1st tee and finishing on the 15th, cutting out 4, 5 & 6 with the long walk to 7, the loop around 9, 10 & 11 and 16,17 & 18.

We anticipate that Nine-Hole Qualifying Competitions will prove to be very popular on Summer evenings and during the restricted daylight hours of late Autumn, Winter and early Spring. We would also expect to see more Senior members using these competitions to make returns for handicapping purposes. Our Thursday Comp could possibly become a Nine-Hole Competition allowing our members to enter after work knowing that they will complete their round.

There’s still a fair amount of work to do in setting up the handicapping software, getting scorecards printed etc, but we hope that our members will look forward to enjoying this added benefit of playing a more leisurely 9 holes to maintain a handicap.

CONGU Section 22: NINE-HOLE QUALIFYING COMPETITIONS is to be applied.

You can find full details of Section 22 at http://www.englandgolf.org/e-brochure/index.html and you will note that:-

  • All Nine Hole Qualifying Competitions must be in Stableford format.
  • Only players in Handicap Categories 2,3,4 and (5) may return Nine-Hole scores for handicap purposes.
  • A Cat 1 player may participate and his score should be recorded in his Player Handicap Record. No adjustment in handicap shall be applied i.e. his score must be disregarded for handicap purposes.

N.B.

TGC Ladies have had an approved 9 hole course for a couple of years.

New Years Eve Masquerade Party / Mon 31st Dec

Turton members and their guests enjoyed a fun Masquerade Theme New Year's Eve. Andy Stones kept everyone royally entertained which was just as well with Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Phillip paying Royal Turton a surprise visit. Thanks to Janet Hewitt and Jennifer Jones for organising the night and setting up the room and to the caterers and bar staff for keeping us fed and watered. Happy New Year.
